What Are Macronutrients?

Macronutrients (often referred to simply as “macros”) are the nutritional components that our bodies need in large amounts to function correctly, provide energy, and sustain life. The three primary macronutrients are:

  2. Carbohydrates
  3. Fats

Unlike micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), which are required in tiny doses, macronutrients provide the actual caloric energy our bodies run on.

1. Protein: The Building Block

Protein is critical for growth, tissue repair, and immune function. It is composed of amino acids, which are often called the building blocks of life.

  • Key Sources: Avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish.
  • Role: Organ protection, cell membrane structure, and long-term energy storage.

How to Calculate Your Macros

Calculating your daily macronutrient targets depends entirely on your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) and your physical goals (e.g., losing weight or gaining muscle).

To structure a balanced baseline diet:
